Pain in lungs is a strong sign of immense congestion due to cold. This is a serious respiratory issue and indicates a serious infestation of viruses inside the lungs. Often, the unattended cold leads to high degrees of inflammation in the bronchial tubes of the lungs. This condition is called acute bronchitis which causes shortness of breath among people. Bronchitis can be life threatening at times as it leads to serious difficulties in breathing. This condition is often accompanied by fever, muscle ache, chills and acute chest pain.

People often describe the hurting of the lungs to a feeling similar to being crushed. The congestion in the lungs blocks the adequate supply of oxygen to the nearby muscles because of which people experience unbearable levels of pain in the chest. Severe form of congestion due to cold can sometimes also lead to angina pectoris. According to doctors, the pain felt at the onset of angina attack reaches the highest possible level. Sometimes, in extreme cases, the inflammation reaches till the microscopic sized air sacs in the lungs called alveoli. In such a condition, these tiny air sacs get filled with the fluid released by the infection. As a result, the supply of oxygen to the blood cells reduces considerably which further leads to chest pains.
