Are Fevers a Symptom of the Common Cold?

When it comes to common cold there is usually slight or no fever at all accompanying it. The most common symptoms of common cold are sneezing, cough, nasal congestion and sore throat. It may also be accompanied by malaise, muscle aches, muscle weakness, fatigue, ‘pink eye’ and headaches. Fever is actually more commonly associated with influenza whose signs and symptoms are quite similar to common cold. Although fever rarely accompanies common cold, there are many people who are suffering from common cold that say that they are feeling a bit of chilliness and since fever is often associated with chills, people think that they are having fever. What these people don’t understand is that it is not always necessary that these chills are caused by fever. It can also be related to some kind of infection or virus.

Even if common cold is accompanied by fever, it mostly affects young children. Young children suffering from common cold are often reported to be having fever between 100-102°F. This fever is known to last only for 2-3 days. Teenagers and adults usually experience slight or no fever. If the fever remains for more than 4-5 days then it might be due to bronchitis or sinus or ear infection.
