Can Colds Cause Ear Pain?

Cold can cause ear ache which can range from mild to a very painful one. There is a tiny tube called Eustachian tube which connects the middle part of ear to the back of the throat and nose. During cold this tube gets blocked and results in buildup of fluid in the middle ear. This fluid which is infected with virus and bacteria causes swelling and pain in the eardrum. This condition is basically referred as otitis media. Children are more vulnerable to get ear pain during cold as their Eustachian tube is shorter and straighter in size as compared to adults and thus the infection can easily travel to the middle ear. In order to prevent the ear pain caused by the cold, the temperature in the inner ear should be stabilized by covering the ear before moving out. One can use hats, ear flaps or scarf to cover the ears. Taking decongestant before going out also proves to be an effective solution to prevent earache caused by cold. The ear pain from cold may also result in fever, difficulty in sleeping and yellow mucus in the nose. Since colds are self limiting conditions thus an earache caused by cold also goes away on its own.
