Catnip for Cold and Flu

Catnip or Catmint is an herbal that is useful in fighting the symptoms of colds and flu, as it has the ability to promote perspiration when feverish and is taken as a hot infusion. This herbal also has properties in it that is a muscle relaxant and a mild sedative to help induce sleep. The botanical name for catnip or catmint is Nepeta cataria L. and is from the family Labiatae, this herbal might also be known as catswort, and field balm.
 
This was used as a herbal in folk medicine to treat respiratory conditions, colic, colds, stomach ailments and other problems such as restlessness, nervousness, hives and toothaches. Catnip was also used in treating fevers as it promotes sweating and also used in the treatment of bronchitis.

The active properties in the plant are found in the flowers and the main active property is nepetalactone. In treating a cold tea made from catnip can be taken two or three times a day and while there are no known drug interactions pregnant women should not take catnip as an her bal treatment. Catnip might induce menstruation and therefore is not advisable to women who are pregnant.
