Can Antihistamines Help a Cold or is it Just for Allergies?

Antihistamines are not effective solution curing cold; however, they can be effectively used to relieve the symptoms and allergies related to cold. Many people agree that a single dosage of Antihistamines gives them a relief from sneezes, running nose and congestion. During the progression of cold, the sinuses and the nasal cavities produce special cells called histamine. These cells cause swelling and itching in the tissues of the nose. These cells further hamper the exit of mucus from the nose. In such conditions, Antihistamines are taken in order to block the production of histamine cells. This gives immense relief from allergies like sneezing and runny nose.

The best results of Antihistamines are seen when they are taken before the full-fledged establishment of allergies. It is a wise step to take an Antihistamine medication right at the onset of allergy in order to dissuade the production of histamine at the beginning. Brompheniramine and Chlorpheniramine are the best Antihistamines for eliminating the symptoms of cold. The main side effect of the above medicines is drowsiness which makes it difficult to concentrate on work during day. This is the reason why Antihistamines are always prescribed as bed time anti-allergies for both children and adults.
